Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu has disclosed why he is happy that he got locked up in Kuje prison for six months between December 2019 till June 2020
In an interview with Channels TV, Kalu said he was supposed to be in Wuhan, China in December 2019 when the deadly virus broke out in the city, however, he got imprisoned before he could travel to China. He said he is very happy he got sent to prison because he could have contracted the virus in China and probably died from it. According to Kalu, his time in the Kuje prison also opened his eyes to several things he didn’t know hitherto. He said his prison experience changed his mentality about life and it made him more humble to people around him.
About 50:30 minutes into a video shared on YouTube, Kalu said: “I ought not to have gone to prison because there were 19 witnesses and nobody said anything about me so I was just jailed because they thought I was going to be president. That is the truth. I am very happy I went to prison for six months and I was very happy there because on the 9th of December I was supposed to be in Wuhan, China for an agricultural conference for this agricultural park we are building here so I didn’t go to that Wuhan, rather I went to Kuje prison which I was very happy.
“On the 10th of December of the same year the [virus] came out from Wuhan, so I might have been in the grave with my forefathers now. So I give thanks to God that the prison changed me, it changed my mentality about life and it brought me to be more humble to my friends and to the Nigerian people. I am very proud that they sent me to that prison because all my life I have been a boy that was born with a silver spoon and I am very happy that I was able to be six months (sic) to see what other Nigerians are doing. Also, the people in that custodial center have gotten benefits because I came there and I saw how human beings live and I am making soo many changes in that Kuje prison. You can go and look”.
